Motion pictures are meant to make audiences laugh, cry, chuckle, sigh – in a word, to momentarily forget themselves and become immersed in a fictitious or non-fictitious celluloid world. To achieve this purpose, filmmakers go to great effort and expense, for example, by creating spectacular special effects, taking care to eliminate all traces of nets, wires, or other devices which might detract from the ilusion created by film professionals and their work. In this same sense, the subtitler commissioned to prepare the foreign language version of a motion picture dialogue list must strive to be both spectacular in competence and imagination, and meticulous about leaving as few traces of his/her presence in the film as possible.
